It is during the holy week known as Semana Santa, Easter processions and parades start taking place.

The holy week starts from Palm Sunday which is the first Sunday of the holy week. During this day, Godparents are supposed to treat their Godchildren with Mona de Pascua. This is a traditional cocoa cake with chocolate topping that can even take the form of the famous cartoon Sponge Bob or folk scenes and characters. Next there is the Holy Thursday when the procession of Verges takes place. It is divided into two parts- one part represents the Passion of Christ while the second one is held on midnight. The second part represents the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The dance of death also takes place when people dress up like skeletons and dance in front of Christ.

After Holy Thursday, Good Friday follows. During this day crucifixes are carried in many places such as the Sant Hilari Sacalm, Besalu and Beget-Camprodon. The most famous procession in Costa Brava during the Easter holidays is in Girona. The procession of the Cofradia de Cristo takes place here where people dress up as Roman soldiers and other costumes. Most of these processions are accompanied by parades, demonstrations and dances. Songs like Saeta or Capella are played during the procession.

menorcaNext, we have the Formentera, an island renowned in Europe for its white clean beaches and crystal clear water. It is called the "last paradise on the Mediterranean" due the lack of urban development there. Lastly, we have the Menorca that is famous for its isolated beaches and coves. Galicia Holidays

Galicia is a province in the very north of Spain and Galicia holidays in an apartment in A Coruna offer you an experience that can be described with one word: green!

Galice_horreo_by_Hugo_Soria_GNU.jpgThe lush mountains, fields and valleys of Galicia are so full of an incredible plant world, that during your Galicia holidays in an apartment in A Coruna you might think you are in Ireland! With booking an apartment in A Coruna you can be sure to spend a Galicia holiday in a wonderful city. Another option is to book a hotel in Santiago de Compostela, which is also the goal destination for the camino de Santiago de Compostela, or Way of St. James, a pilgrimage route along the north of Spain.

As a main sight in Santiago de Compostela, the  Catedral de Santiago de Compostela, or Santiago de Compostela Cathedral gives you the chance to see one of the oldest cathedrals in Spain, which is said to be resting place of the apostle St. James, originally only a small tomb but later expanded to the Cathedral Santiago de Compostela. The architecture of the different façades is incredibly detailled and this is reflected in the floor plan of the cathedral itself, too: the Santiago de Compostela Cathedral has the form of a cross.

Other interesting sights in Santiago de Compostela include the Casa Gotica, or Gothic House, which dates from the 14th century and houses also a museum dedicated to the pilgrimage way, the Pilgrimage Museum. But besides imposant monuments and museums, Santiago de Compostela also has a lot of parks to offer, one of the best ones is the Alameda Park. If you need to rest in a natural surrounding during your Galicia holidays in a hotel in Santiago de Compostela, the Alameda Park in Santiago de Compostela gives you shelter and impresses you with beautiful pavillons and large oak trees.

But of course, your Galicia holidays will be incomplete without discovering the amazing nature of the surrounding! Galicia is located at the Atlantic Ocean, with beautiful coastlines and capes, and is surrounded by mountains. Very interesting natural sights in Galicia are the many rivers flowing through the province, which add to the green feeling of this region.

Ribeira_Sacra__R%C3%ADo_Sil__Lugo__Galiza_by_vorjales_CC2.jpgWonderful Galicia holidays can also be spend at A Coruna, the capital of the province and second largest city, with the Torre de Hércules, or Tower of Hercules near the city. The Tower of Hercules is around 2000 years old and was used as a lighthouse, and still is today. There is a legend that the famous Hercules battled with an enemy here, which gives the lighthouse its name.

In the province of Galicia are also different natural parks, each worth a visit during your Galicia holidays: The Atlantic Islands of Galicia National Park, the River Eume Natural Park and the Dunes of Corrubedo Natural Park. You can walk along the coasts and capes and discover the rich green nature of Spain's north, which differs a lot from the rest of Spain.

800px-Bolboreta_azul_by_Javier_Pais_CC2.jpgIf you decide to spend your Galicia holidays in Spain, you will not be disappointed if you want to see a different face of Spain. The green and lush nature is a unique site in the north of the country, and especially booking an apartment in A Coruna will give you pleasure in discovering the culture and history of the region.

Galicia holidays are also easily reachable thanks to the two airports in Galicia; Lavacolla airport in Santiago de Compostela and Alvedro airport in A Coruna.

Spend unforgettable Galicia holidays in Spain!

Costa Blanca holidays in Elche

Lying close to the Alicante airport, it could be a good decision to spend your Costa Blanca holidays in Elche or Elx, if you are fond of history and palm trees. The city of Elche or Elx is located at the Costa Blanca in Spain and a perfect holiday destinations thanks to the Elche weather and the good quality Elche hotels in Spain.

Elx_panoramica_by_Carlos_Quesada.jpgElche is only about 23 km away from Alicante, so it is also possible to stay in Alicante and plan one or two day tours to this wonderful historical city. But of course, it is also recommended to stay in a Costa Blanca hotel in Elche to fully enjoy your holidays in Spain.

The palm tree filled city offers a lot of sights, thanks to the interesting history of the town. Originally Elche was located about 10 km away from its actual position when it was established around 600 B.C and was originally called Helike, resembling its status as Greek colony.

After being conquered and reconquered by Romans, Moors, Carthaginians, Goths and the Spanish Kingdom again, the city survived and presents its diverse history in the Elche museums: the Archaeology and History Museum or Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche, the Elche Palaeontological Museum, the Elche Municipal Festa Museum and the Palm Groves Museum.

If you have the chance to visit any of the Elche museums during your stay in a hotel in Elche, make sure not to miss it, as they offer the most interesting exhibitions and history.

400px-Huerto_del_Cura2003_by_Javier_martin_GNU.jpgAdding to Elches reputation of being a palm tree city and at the same time being  UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the Elche Palm Grove or Palmeral de Elche. In case you are not staying in one of the Elche hotels in Spain, but in the near Alicante and planning a day trip to Elche, make sure to visit this jewel of Elche first.

As the name suggests, the Elche Palm Grove or Palmeral de Elche is a palm grove, or park in which thousands of palm trees are planted. It is the largest in Europe and also one of the largest ones in the whole world, although it was larger in the past. If you visit this palm tree park, you will be stunned and amazed at the variety and age of the different palm trees (some of them are about 300 years old), fully worth its status as UNESCO World Heritage Site.

For those of you enjoying history and exotic recreation during their Costa Blanca holidays in Elche it is a good possibility to relax while walking along the immense palm trees, which exist since around 500 BC.

Of course this is not the only sight you can visit during your stay in a hotel in Elche. Near the original location of Elche an ancient statue was found, the image of a woman with ornaments in her hair. This statue, the Lady of Elche or also Dama de Elche, is today exhibited in Madrid, but there is a replica in the museum in Elche. The bust of the Lady of Elche dates from around 400 BC and was discovered in 1897.

800px-Dame_%28Elche%29_by_P.H.Louw_GNU.jpgSightseeing in Elche still comes to no end, because there is still the Mystery Play of Elche, which is a play dedicated to Mary and takes place yearly in the middle of August. The Mystery Play of Elche is impressing, and if you have the chance to see it during your Costa Blanca holidays in Elche, definitely see it.

The palm tree city of Elche is, thanks to the close location to the Alicante airport, a perfect holiday destination for all those interested in Spain's early history, as well as people in search of recreation who can walk around the Palm Tree Grove of Elche or along the beaches of the Costa Blanca, which are not too far away (about 20 km). Elche or Elx has interesting sights to discover, so book your hotel in Elche in advance to fully enjoy your Spain holidays!

Turron from Alicante

Not only sweet toothed people may have heard of Turrón, a Spanish sweet traditionally made and eaten around Christmas. But did you already know that the best Turron is from Alicante?

800px-Turr%C3%B3n_%28Casa_Mira%29_by_Tamorlan_CC3.jpgSo if you are planning a Spain holiday soon, you should spend it in an Alicante hotel to try the delicious Turron! For those who do not know what it is: Turron is a sweet made usually from honay, sugar, egg white and almonds. But there are a lot of different versions you will encounter during your Spain holiday, e.g. with hazelnuts, chocolate or candied fruits.

Turron from Alicante is verifiably made since the 16th century, with the two most famous cities for that being Alicante itself and Jijona, or also called Xixona. The difference between the two kinds of Turrón lies in the consistency; Turron from Alicante is hard with whole pieces of almonds, Turron from Jijona additionally contains oil and the almonds are fabricated to a creamy dough, which makes them softer and stickier.

800px-Turr%C3%B3n_de_Jijona_%28Mallorquina%29_by_Tamorlan_CC3.jpgTurron is also called Torró in Valencia and Alicante and is a delicious treat, so famous and traditional that it is now under Protected Geographical Status. Should you spend your Spain holiday in one of the hotels in Alicante, you can bring some Turron from Alicante to your family and friends!

800px-Flan_de_turron_by_Javier_Lastras_CC2.jpgAlthough Turron is usually cut into long pieces, there are other forms as well, depending on the decoration. Another popular form is a circle, similar to a cake or a pizza the Turron is cut in pieces and shared. As traditional Christmas specialty Turron from Alicante is popular with young and old, so don't miss a piece if something is offered to you in your Alicante hotel.

But also outside of your Alicante hotel you can discover a lot of this sweet, if you are on a discovery tour during your Spain holiday. The local manufacture is a sight and a must see during a stay in the city. But not only Turron from Alicante is good for sightseeing, there are a lot of other sights in Alicante (read here my article about family holidays in Alicante).

What are you waiting for? Plan your Spain holiday and try the delicious Turron from Alicante!

The restaurants and fish-shop owners buy their fish and seafood directly from the fishers every day and so you can eat delicious seafood dishes from Palamós in the evening, freshly caught and made! Try to find a Costa Brava holiday home in Palamós that is near the port, so you can watch the ships leave early in the morning and return in the evening.

800px-Crevettes.jpg

Prawn eating in Palamós, Costa Brava is of course possible in one of the many local restaurants. A famous restaurant is "La Gamba" (what a suitable name!) and it is located at the Placa Sant Pere, directly at the harbor. Try to be there a little bit in advance, as I mentioned it is quite famous! But in case you prefer something else, around the port are many bars and restaurants that offer quality seafood dishes too.

But of course instead of going to a good restaurant, you can try to cook by yourself! If you buy fresh prawns or other fish from the shop, you can prepare and cook them in your Costa Brava apartment or hotel! Prices for gambas differ widely, depending on many circumstances. But now that the summer months are slowly over, prawn prices are much cheaper. This is only another reason to book Costa Brava Accommodation now!

But gambas are not the only thing Palamos offers: It also home of Catalonias oldest football club, Palamós CF! The football club Palamos was established in 1898, and although it is not too successful, football is still popular in Palamos.

In case you prefer another Costa Brava holiday destination, you can also look for an apartment or hotel in Girona. It is not too far and you have the possibility to visit Palamos for a day to enjoy the gambas.

L'Ametlla de Mar at Costa Dorada

Do you like charming little towns and villages that are located along the sea? Then you have to spend you next holidays in Costa Dorada!

L'Ametlla de Mar is also called La Cala (it means The Cove) and is a wonderful Costa Dorada holiday destination. It developed as a fishing town and this is still the main activity of L'Ametlla de Mar and if you like tuna fish, you should see the tuna fishing boats (they are the most important fleet for tuna in Catalonia). Furthermore, L'Ametlla de Mar has a large sailing club for those of you who want to spend your Costa Dorada vacation on a boat. You can also walk around the beautiful harbor (one of the most important harbors in the region) and look at the sea.

800px-Port_de_l%27Ametlla_de_Mar.jpgIt is best to book a Costa Dorada hotel directly in L'Ametlla de Mar so you don't have to travel a lot and can see the most of L'Ametlla. But of course, it is also possible to visit the town by train. You can either travel from Valencia or from Barcelona by train, but the Reus airport is only 35 km away.

After you arrived, you can immediately see the wonderful coastline which is about 14 km long. Along the coast there are cliffs and the typical pine trees giving L'Ametlla its true Mediterranean feeling. It is a quiet and calm town perfect for those who want to avoid crowded beaches.

You absolutely have to visit the Museum of popular Ceramics when you are spending your Costa Dorada vacation in L'Ametlla, it is really interesting to see. The museum has two floors full of ceramics from whole Spain and it's the largest museum in Europe with its 4500 pieces.

Not far away is also La Cala de Sant Jordi, another fishing town located at the coastline. Remember to visit this town as well, because there are ruins of an historical castle, the Castle Sant Jordi. If you like history and religion, it is interesting to know that in this castle was the Order of Sant Jordi, which is known to have been the only part of the Templar Knights in Catalonia. Built on the ruins, there is a renovated castle nowadays.

800px-AmetllaDeMar_Beach.jpgWhat is interesting for families is that L'Amitlla de Mar is not very far awar from Port Aventura Park, also located on the Costa Dorada. DaveOnRoseFloat.gifThe "Carnaval de Roses" has a long tradition. This celebration takes place in Roses at the Costa Brava in the middle of February. Not only because of this, Costa Brava hotels and Costa Brava apartments are often booked out.

The festivities start this year at 11 February for activities for the young and the young at heart. However, the official beginning is set by the arrival of the "king of carnival" in the afternoon. Music and dance follows throughout the whole day into late night. Who is interested in taking part is welcome to do so. There are no costs for taking part in the festivities. Merely, the traditional rice lunch requires a small amout of money.

In the late afternoon, dozens of people meet at the beach, next to the citadel of Roses. This large group of people will run simultaneously into the Costa Brava floods. this is usually a big spectacle - not only for the swimmers.

Also, part of the programme will be, of course, a large parade through the streets of Roses. Children play usually a major role of the parades. Like the grown ups, the kids diguiseroses-karneval3.jpg themselves with splendid costumes. But beside the kids, the elderly people take also part in the festivities. They even alect their own "carnival's king and queen". Those two lucky persons will be called out in the evning celebration, besides the regualr carnivals king and queen.

Similar to other carnival parties in Catalonia, the festivities end with the funeral of the old king. The "Carnaval de Roses" ends on February 15th with this annual tradition.

Carnaval de Tenerife: Europe's largest carnival party

The secound largest carnival in the world is the Carnival of Tenerife. As soon as the Spanish spring begins, the whole island is on its feet. Because of this two reasons, tourists from around the world travel to Tenerife and spend the first warm days in a Tenerife hotel.

3.jpgMost people combine their holidays on the Canary Islands with a trip to the world famous carnival party of Tenerife, which has an interesting history: The carnival of Tenerife has a far reaching history, which begins in the 16th century. Even at that time, people used to disguise themeselves to express their criticism about satirical speeches and vocals. In the following years, the carnival has been forbidden. Not until the beginning of the 18th century, the prohibition has been lifted. But the during the dictorship of Franco, the prohibition returned. In 1961, the prohibition has finally been lifted.

Since that time, Santa Cruz de Tenerife was the first city that has celebrated carnival after years of prohibition. Until 1977, carnival has been known by the name of "winter festival" befor it changed his name to the Carnival of Tenerife.

The similarities of the carnival parties in Latin America is not a contingency. Like in Rio de Janeiro, the Carnival of Tenerife is known for its gorgeous costumes. This is why immigrants from latin America brought their influences to Tenerife.

guachipanduzy-300x220.jpgThe election for the carnivals's king and queen sound the bell for the beginning of the festivities. The queen wears a traditional and eloborate costume.Beside the carnival festivities for adults, there is also a carnivals party especially for children, which at least as lavish as the adult carnival..

Europe's largest carnival party starts on 7 February 2010 and ends on 21 February. The celebration will be located nearly in every village and city on Tenerife. The biggest party however, will be located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz. The Carnival of Tenerife ends with the beginning of the Lent at the end of February.

CosmoCaixa

One of the biggest and most important museums

If you will stay for holiday in Barcelona and stay in a Barcelona hotel you should definetly visit this really interesting mueseum with the whole family.

The CosmoCaixa is not even one of the biggest museums in Barcelona but also one of the biggest in Spain. After 100 million euro the modernism building was opened in the year 2005. It is one of the most important museums of science sponsored by the famous bank "la caixa".

The most significant difference to other museums is that it is no typical exposure. The people should try the different things by themselves. You can do physic, engineering, geological, chemical and math experiments. So it is not only fun for kids to learn how different things are working.
It all starts with a 30 meter coil which is around a tropical tree from Amazon and ends in the 5th basement floor.

There are then a lot of different theme areas. For example you could see a pendulum which shows the rotation of the earth. Furthermore, you could learn much about waves, which different kinds there are and with a simulator you could see how they form the coast. Or if you want you could create your own sandstorm.
Even a rainforest with trees and plants from the Amazon exists. Of course there are also a plenty of Animals from this region. But be careful - sometimes it will rain there.
If you are hungry you could go in the outside area of the museum and have a picnic or you will visit the satellite dish which is only 80 meters away and shows how the sound is been created.
So in whatever you are interested, a visit in this museum is definitely worth time.
