Fiesta Mayor 2011

The Fiesta Mayor, which takes place in Sitges every year in late August, represents an important event of great public interest, especially for Catalonia citzens.

This year the event takes place between the 21th and the 27th of August on the streets of Sitges. You can enjoy music and traditional dances and of course, also rush into the fray yourself. There will also be final parades with giants with big heads and a spectacular fireworks display, which is late in the evening of the 23rd.

 

The Festa Major in Sitges is also the setting of a famous Catalan tradition: the realization of human pyramids or castles. Very impressive, these pyramids can have a vertiginous height of 10 people over each other, which may correspond to a height of up to 20 meters! The acrobatics in the street are superb with a small child at the very top. People gather around them to form a human safety net. Sometimes they fall, but most of the time they perform spectacular shows that will take your breath away.

Tomatina 2011

It is a tradition with thousands of people from all over the world willing to participate in this battle of tomatoes.

The rules are simple: don´t be afraid to get dirty and jump on each other. All you need now is a hotel in Valencia or an apartment in Valencia, a little craziness and a real desire to enjoy and have fun!


tomatinaIn 2009, 45,000 people gathered using 125 tons of tomatoes throwing them at eachother. It is important to note that the tomatoes used to be rotten and were not sellable.

This amazing tradition began in 1945 when the young at that time found themselves at the center of the village of Buñol. People started throwing tomatoes after a man which caused a huge riot afterwards.

This year's Tomatina 2011will take place on the 31st of August, so do not hesitate to participate and meet the basic safety rules, namely use prohibited bottles, dangerous objects, the tomatoes must be crushed before being thrown and the battle must be stopped when the bell is rung after the second time.

How to get to Tomatina 2011

Bunol is a town and municipality in the province of Valencia, Spain and is situated approximately 38 km west of the provincial and autonomous community capital city, Valencia.

The majority of people travelling to the Tomatina festival stay in Valencia and make the trip to Bunol for the day of the tomato battle.

You also could take the bus in Valencia, to Buñol. The bus leaves from "Estación del Norte", the central train station in Valencia at 08.30 hour on Wednesday the 31st of August 2011. Then the bus will return to Valencia (from the football field in Buñol) at 15.00 hour. The price of this bus ticket is €30,-. The ticket for the bus, you need to book online.

Holidays in Calella

Calella is a popular destination at the Costa Brava coast and is only 55 km from Barcelona. It not only provides a beautiful beach and landscape but also a family friendly environment.

Marbella- the jewel of Costa del Sol

Marbella, situated in Andalusia and in the province of Malaga, is a favorite location of the rich and famous, as well as for ordinary folk who are willing to pay a bit extra. Marbella and the nearby marina Puerto Banus are important tourist resorts on the Costa del Sol. Marbella is famous for its luxury cruise ships and yachts which are docked in its harbor. Sardana Festival San Marti Costa Dorada

Planning your Costa Dorada holiday in November proves to be a good idea, because on 7th November in Salou, the Sardana Festival of San Marti is held! Salou is located in Tarragona at the Costa Dorada.

As you probably know by now, the sardana is the traditional dance of Katalonia. Sardana is a quite relaxing dance as it has a slower rhythm and simple, but beautiful steps. It is also a nice group activity because sardana is danced in a circle with many people holding their hands above their heads while dancing. Sometimes more than 20 people dance in a circle! Sitges Film Festival 2010

Starting from 7th October to 17th October it is time to plan your Sitges holidays, because the Sitges Film Festival 2010 ist held again in the small coastal town next to Barcelona!

The Sitges Film Festival is known to be specialized in fantasy and horror movies, and this year it is held for the 43rd time! It is an annual event that shouldn't be missed if you plan your Sitges Barcelona holidays in October.

Carnaval de Roses: How the Costa Brava celebrates carnival

Besides Sitges, Roses at the Costa Brava offers a unique carnival celebration in sunny Catalonia. Not only because of its costumes can Roses offer its visitors a great carnival party.

DaveOnRoseFloat.gifThe "Carnaval de Roses" has a long tradition. This celebration takes place in Roses at the Costa Brava in the middle of February. Not only because of this, Costa Brava hotels and Costa Brava apartments are often booked out.

The festivities start this year at 11 February for activities for the young and the young at heart. However, the official beginning is set by the arrival of the "king of carnival" in the afternoon. Music and dance follows throughout the whole day into late night. Who is interested in taking part is welcome to do so. There are no costs for taking part in the festivities. Merely, the traditional rice lunch requires a small amout of money.

In the late afternoon, dozens of people meet at the beach, next to the citadel of Roses. This large group of people will run simultaneously into the Costa Brava floods. this is usually a big spectacle - not only for the swimmers.

Also, part of the programme will be, of course, a large parade through the streets of Roses. Children play usually a major role of the parades. Like the grown ups, the kids diguiseroses-karneval3.jpg themselves with splendid costumes. But beside the kids, the elderly people take also part in the festivities. They even alect their own "carnival's king and queen". Those two lucky persons will be called out in the evning celebration, besides the regualr carnivals king and queen.

Similar to other carnival parties in Catalonia, the festivities end with the funeral of the old king. The "Carnaval de Roses" ends on February 15th with this annual tradition.

In the Maricel-Museum you can see great collections of romance, gothic and modern art. The Romance Museum shows the Catalan community of the 19. Century. The Cau Ferrat Museum houses important artworks by modern artists. The museum is situated in the ancient home of the artist Santiago Rusiñol.
