Jirona & Alicante, 2 cities, 1 candy!
The Turrón is a Spanish candy close to some nougat, containing honey, sugar and egg white, perfumed with flaked almonds and shaped like a rectangular or circular tablet. Turrón word is mainly used for traditional candy from Jijona in Spain.
The Turrón is from Arabic origin, we find the same ingredients in other traditional confectioneries from Alpujarras, or in the neighborhood of Grenada and Almeria, where the almond culture is really important. Honey and dry fruits candies are also part of the Maghreb's culture.
There is 2 main kind of Turrón:
- El Turrón Blanco (soft), from Jijona: from almonds' powder, is a soft brown nougat, very sweet and oily.
- El Turrón Duro (hard), from Alicante: From full almonds, it looks more like nougat but really hard; even to cut with a knife.
Some statistics: In 2003, Spanish have eaten 560g of Turrón per person in average. The total of sales was above 27.000 tonnes.
