The famous Hogueras de San Juan in Alicante

hogueras_alicante.jpg The Hogueras de San Juan fiestas in Alicante are not only loved by inhabitants of the habour city but also by holiday makers staying at Alicante hotels during the summer. This festival, marking the arrival of the summer, is a huge spectacle that takes place from the 20th to the 29th of June. The party atmosphere that invades the streets will be enjoyed by both inhabitants and visitors of the city. You might join open-air concerts, admire the various fireworks or visit one of the bullfights that are held within the event of the midsummer bonfires. Wood and paper maché structures (hogueras) can be found throughout the city center of Alicante and the suburbs and are burnt down on the night of San Juan (24th of June). When the grandiose firework is displayed from the Castillo de Santa Bárbara and lights the city it is also the signal to burn the lovely handmade las hogueras. Especially on the Night of San Juan the city seems to burn completely. But thanks to the firemen the party continues until dawn and even some days after. From Playa de San Juan hotels you can easily join the party night on the 24th and spend the night on the beach with thousands of people welcoming the summer. Although Alicante is considered to celebrate the most colourful festival of the Bonfires of Saint John (Spanish: Las Hogueras de San Juan) you can enjoy Spanish fiestas all along the coastline.
